Biography

Lillie Hitchcock Coit came to San Francisco with her parents in 1851. She became the mascot for the "Knickerbocker 5" fire fighters and in 1863 an honorary member of the company. One third of her fortune was left to the city of San Francisco, and using this money, Coit Tower on Telegraph Hill was constructed.
