William Johnston (June 2, 1879--November 15, 1905) arrived in Sacramento on August 26, 1849 to mine gold. He returned to Richland,
California in September of 1850 to claim 160 acres for farming. He married Elizabeth Hite in 1854 and they had three children;
M. Bella, William and Mary J. (Matie). Johnston was elected Assemblyman in 1871, Senator in 1880-1881. Frank A. Edinger married
Mary J. Johnston and subsequently became part owner of the Johnston ranch. He was also a railroad dispatcher.
