Scope and Content of the Collection

The papers of Gertrude Atherton were a gift to The Bancroft Library, June 26, 1953, from her daughter, Mrs. Muriel Atherton Russell. Mrs. Atherton's early papers were destroyed in the San Francisco earthquake and fire, 1906; some are in the Library of Congress. This group, which mostly covers the period from 1920 to her death in 1948, includes correspondence, manuscripts of novels and stories, accounts with publishers and newspaper clippings concerning her writings. The collection also includes some additional manuscripts and correspondence donated to the Bancroft Library in 1975.
There are very few copies of Mrs. Atherton's letters since she rarely used a typewriter. The letters to her are arranged alphabetically. The following list contains the names of all her correspondents. Cards have been placed in the Manuscripts Catalog for those judged most important. However, no cards have been made for the large groups of publisher's letters.
Letters written by Mrs. Atherton acquired from several sources, have been placed in boxes 14-15.
