Biography

J.W.L. Brown of Marietta, Ohio came to California in 1852 with his sons James, John and Will to join his brother Frank, already in Sonoma. He mined in Tuolumne County until 1855 when he returned to Ohio without striking it rich in the California Gold Rush. He continued to correspond with his brother and sons who stayed on in California.
