Historical Note
PRINCESS SOPHIA was a steamship owned by the Canadian Pacific Railway. She was built in 1912 by Bow, McLachlan & Co. at Paisley, Scotland. On October 23, 1918 she was caught in a storm and ran aground on Vanderbilt Reef, midway between Skagway and Juneau. The reef was yards away from the shore, but efforts to rescue the passengers and crew were unsuccessful. On October 25, a second storm swept her off the reef, and she sunk. All 75 crew and 268 passengers were lost.

The collection was donated to the San Francisco Maritime Museum by H. C. Lind on October 18, 1954. The materials were accessioned
into the National Park Service when the museum was made a unit of Golden Gate National Recreation Area (GOGA-735) and then
were transferred to San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park after the establishment of the new park in 1989 (SAFR-1).
