Scope and Content Notes

The collection contains correspondence, photographs, and other material collected by Milton Hammer, much of it during his career as a rare book and manuscripts dealer. Prominent individuals represented in the collection include Heinrich Boll, Ralph Waldo Emerson, James A. Garfield, Oliver Wendell Holmes, J. Edgar Hoover, Hubert H. Humphrey, Henry James, John F. Kennedy, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Lewis Mumford, Napoleon (Bonaparte), Harold Pinter, and Harry S. Truman.
The manuscript materials are part of a larger collection that includes printed materials (mainly modern first editions and fine presses) which have been cataloged separately and which can be searched on Pegasus, the UCSB Libraries online catalog.
