Records from all three governing bodies of the LWVBA are located in this series. The Bay Area Steering Committee (1960-1961)
and the Executive Committee (1961-1966) records are located in Subseries 1.5, Committees, and records of the Board of Directors
(1966-current) make up Subseries 1.1.
Annual reports are located in Subseries 1.1, Board of Directors, and in Subseries 1.4, Inter-League Organization. Annual reports
in the Board of Directors subseries were primarily written for the LWVBA membership, while the annual reports in Subseries
1.4 were compiled to fulfill annual reporting requirements of the League of Women Voters of California and the League of Women
Voters of the United States.

Bay Area Observer was concluded in 1980 and the
Bay Area Monitor was expanded to include
Bay Area Observer issues such as air quality and transportation. Records of the publication
Bay Area Monitor are located in Subseries 2.2, Natural Resources, as part of the Transportation Alternatives Project. Also included in this
subseries is a LWVBA brochure, the Local Board Directory, the first edition of
Action Focus: A Guide for Regional Action, 1982-1984, and a few editions of
Action on Issues. These volumes contain information on LWVBA membership, history, programs, and action.
This series includes only records of the publications and a few heavily annotated editions of the publications as the bulk
of the publications were separated from the collection and cataloged separately.

Policy, Transportation, and Other Action. Subseries names relate to program areas of the LWVBA.
This series, the largest in the collection, contains action files, project files, workshop and conference records, and study
material documenting the LWVBA positions and programs dating from 1958. Very little action and study material for the years
1976-1978, 1982-1986, and 1988-1990 exists in this series. Files on specific agencies may exist in more than one subseries
due to the topic of the agency's activity. For example, files regarding the Association of Bay Area Governments (ABAG) are
located in Subseries 2.1, Governance, and in Subseries 2.2, Natural Resources, due to ABAG's involvement in both regional
government planning and environmental management planning. Legislation files in Subseries 2.5, Other Action, pertain to various
topics that may also be represented in other subseries. For example, legislation files on assembly bill 2310 deal with regional
planning, and other regional planning material, such as studies, are located in Subseries 2.1, Governance. Documentation of
LWVBA positions and programs may also be found in Subseries 1.5, Committees; Subseries 1.6, Programs; and Subseries 1.7, Conventions
and Meetings.

This subseries contains material from the earliest studies conducted by the LWVBA dating back to 1958. Material in this subseries
deals primarily with regional government and regional planning, two issues that were adopted into the LWVBA program during
1960. This subseries includes early files regarding the Association of Bay Area Governments (ABAG), Bay Area Metropolitan
Project files, Local Agency Formation Commission/Congestion Management Agency study records, and records from multiple regional
government studies. Of note in this subseries are the records relating to ABAG that include documentation on the Bay Area's
first comprehensive regional plan in 1970 and a LWVBA evaluation of the plan in a 1974-1976 study.

This subseries contains records dealing with environmental issues such as air quality, hazardous materials, land use, environmental
mitigation, solid waste, and water quality. As early as 1963-1964, programs related to environmental issues were adopted by
the LWVBA. This subseries includes records regarding the Association of Bay Area Governments, the Bay Area Air Pollution Control
District, Bay Conservation and Development Commission, the California Environmental Quality Act, the Clean Air Act, the San
Francisco Planning and Urban Renewal Association, and the Bay Delta Project. Of note in this subseries are early records regarding
the Bay Conservation and Development Commission, which was permanently established in 1969 as the nation's first coastal management
agency.
This subseries also includes material from the LWVBA Transportation Alternatives Project, which was established in 1974 and
initially funded by the Environmental Protection Agency. The project lasted ten years and was created to support efforts to
develop a regional public transit system and to educate the public of the need to use transit in response to the federal Clean
Air Act. Records of the Bay Area Monitor Project and the publication entitled,
Bay Area Monitor, are part of the Transportation Alternatives Project files. Also included in the Transportation Alternatives Project material
are slides from the 1974 presentation, "Does it Have to be This Way?"

This subseries contains action files relating to legislation and local league action. Legislation files consist mostly of
assembly bill (AB) and senate bill (SB) documentation. Among other issues, the LWVBA participated in developing legislation
to create a multi-purpose regional Bay Area agency to address area-wide problems such as pollution, transportation, recreation,
and open space. The LWVBA supported several bills such as AB 2310 in 1970, AB 1057 in 1971, AB 2040 in 1973, and AB 625 in
1975, dealing with the establishment of a regional agency. The Local Leagues Action Files contain correspondence, meeting
records, and position statements regarding action issues of local leagues.

This series documents the LWVBA celebration of the nationwide 75th anniversary of the League of Women Voters and the Women's
Suffrage Movement. As part of the celebration, the LWVBA sought to record the experiences and accomplishments of individuals
who played significant roles in the development of the LWVBA and its historic action programs through exhibits, events, and
an oral history project.
Photographs were removed from this series and transferred to the Pictorial Collection of The Bancroft Library. Separation
sheets with brief descriptions of the images were placed in the folders where photographs were removed.

This subseries contains interview files from twenty-two oral histories that were conducted by the LWVBA. The interview files
include biographical information about the interviewee, interview notes, and correspondence. There is a significant amount
of background material on Mary Lee Jefferds including original awards, certificates, and newspaper clippings dating from 1939,
and much less information on other interviewees. The interview files also contain full transcripts of interviews with the
following individuals: Jane Baker, Betty Ann Bruno, Virginia DuMont, Ann Duncan, Susan Duncan, Ruth Ganong, Janet Gray Hayes,
Sue Lempert, Sylvia McLaughlin, Margaret Millner, and Alba Witkin. Also included in this subseries are legal agreements for
many of the interviews, planning materials, and the LWVBA Oral History Training Kit.
Audio recordings were removed from this subseries and transferred to the Microforms Collection of The Bancroft Library. Separated
