Abstract: Journal articles, newspaper clippings,
dissertations, bibliographies, correspondence, flyers, slides and photographs
collected by art scholar Sarah Stifler who researched the materials for her
doctoral dissertation,
Slippery When Wet: Visibility Politics and Lesbian
Art in Los Angeles from 1970 to the Present
(2002). The bulk of the
materials are photocopies, and the content documents significant people and
organizations in the development of lesbian and feminist art, including the Los
Angeles Woman's Building, the Feminist Art Program at the California Institute
of the Arts, the Feminist Studio Workshop and the Great American Lesbian Art
Show.

Biography
Sarah Stifler is a scholar of art history with particular interests in
contemporary art, gender and sexuality. In 1994, she received her Bachelor's
degree in Art History at the University of Colorado at Boulder, and in 2000,
she received her Master's degree in Art History at the University of Southern
California (USC.) From 1997 to 2002, she pursued a Doctorate degree at USC,
where she concentrated on lesbian and feminist art in Los Angeles from the
1970s to 2000.
She has worked as a research assistant at the Getty Research Institute
in Los Angeles, a teaching assistant at the Department of Art History at USC, a
marketing coordinator at the Timothy Yarger Fine Art Gallery, and a public arts
advisor for the Boulder City Arts Council. As of July 2007, Stifler continues
to work at the Getty Research Institute and lives in West Hollywood,
California.
Scope and Content of Collection
The Sarah Stifler Papers contains photocopies of journal articles,
newspaper clippings, book chapters, correspondence, flyers, pamphlets and
dissertations; as well as bibliographies, typescripts, photographs and slides
collected for Stifler's doctoral dissertation,
Slippery When Wet: Visibility Politics and Lesbian
Art in Los Angeles from 1970 to the Present
. The collection is divided
into three series: (1) General, (2) Dissertation Chapter Resources and Notes,
and (3) Slides and Photographs. The General Series contains Stifler's resumés,
bibliographies and general research material for topics such as the gay and
lesbian liberation movement; gay, lesbian and queer art; art in Los Angeles;
lesbian and feminist artists; and the Feminist Art Progam at the California
Institute of the Arts. The Dissertation Chapter Resources and Notes Series
includes material related to specific chapters and sections in Stifler's
dissertation. The Slides and Photographs Series comprises images of artworks
from lesbian and feminists artists and from the exhibitions "Great American
Lesbian Art Show" and "In a Different Light."
