Biography / Administrative History

Dutch Flat, California was originally a gold mining town settled by Germans (1851). It was later a stage stop enroute to Washoe, Nevada (1860s) and a train stop on transcontinental railroad (1869). Lumbering was major industry in more recent times.

Scope and Content of Collection

Collection is divided into four groups. The first is a book of waterpress copies of G.H. Colby, Notary Public (1883-1887). Correspondence (1900-1909) of W.P. Sowden, a Dutch Flat attorney, comprises a group of 5 file folders. Towle Lumber Company correspondence, 1932-33, is the third group. The last group is miscellaneous correspondence and scraps, 1903-1905 and undated.
