Organizational History
In the largest sense, the
AIDS
Program at San Francisco General Hospital (SFGH) refers to the totality of
AIDS
-related activities at the hospital. More commonly, however, the phrase is used to refer to the outpatient
AIDS
Clinic and a number of short- and long-term research projects loosely connected to it.
The
AIDS
Program declares that its mission is to:
- Provide comprehensive, expert and humane care to a population which reflects the demographic and clinical spectrum of HIV
disease,
- Conduct an aggressive research programs that enables us to improve patient care and the duration and quality of our patient's
lives, and
- Share our experience with other health care professionals and the public through our publications and direct educational programs.
Although it is now surmised that people with HIV disease were patients at SFGH as early as 1980, the first documented case,
a man with Kaposi's Sarcoma, was identified in June of 1981. During late 1981 and early 1982 the Kaposi's Sarcoma Clinic was
formed at UCSF by Paul Volberding and Marcus Conant. Patients were evaluated at UCSF and referred to the Oncology Clinic at
SFGH for treatment. Other opportunistic infections in KS patients, primarily pneumocistis pneumonia (PCP), were managed by
Constance Wofsy, Acting Chief of Infectious Diseases at SFGH. These components were brought together when the
AIDS
Clinic was opened on Ward 86 in January of 1983. The inpatient ward at SFGH, Ward 5B, was opened a few months later, in June
of 1983.
In July of 1983, Dr. Donald Abrams came to Ward 86 from UCSF. Nurse Practitioners J.B.Molaghan and Gary Carr joined the staff
in November of 1983. Volberding, Wofsy (deceased), Abrams, Molaghan and Carr were the nucleus around which the
AIDS
Program grew. Eventually, other program elements developed out of the
AIDS
Ward, including numerous research entities, clinical programs, and educational components.

Scope and Contents
The bulk of administrative records stem from Paul Volberding's office. Volberding, founder of one of the earliest
AIDS
Clinics and director of a program which has consistently had high media visibility, has been a well-known public figure since
1983. Thus he attracted a large volume of correspondence—from physicians with questions or referrals, Persons with
AIDS
(PWAs) requesting help, scientists and pharmaceutical companies wanting to collaborate, health care and educational organizations
pursuing presentations, students, residents and working physicians seeking jobs or learning experiences, and an array of individuals
writing with unsolicited messages. Over one third of the total collection is composed of Volberding's correspondence files.
This correspondence begins in 1981 and contains information on numerous subjects. Beyond the documentation of the early history
of
AIDS
and course of the disease, these letters also record the evolution of the clinic, scientific advances in
AIDS
research and treatment of its sequelae, and a host of social and political issues that materialized. The "Crank Letters"
files are a particularly fascinating series that contains letters offering miraculous "cures", strange visions, and hate messages.
Another sizeable series is composed of the correspondence of Dr Constance Wofsy, a well known
AIDS
practitioner who was one of the first physicians in San Francisco to care for young men with severe immune dysfunction. A
handful of her earliest letters pre-date the June 1981 CDC report on the newly recognized syndrome affecting gay men. Additional
Wofsy files relate to her lectures, a PCP study group that met at SFGH during the mid 1980s, and the development of Project
AWARE, an outreach to women with, or at risk of, HIV infection.
Correspondence from Dr. Donald Abrams can also be found in this record group, as well as administrative records documenting
the activities of San Francisco General Hospital's
AIDS
Ward, such as meeting minutes, contract information, budget and financial information, and other
AIDS
related materials.
The record group is organized into nine series:
- Correspondence, Dr. Paul Volberding
- Correspondence, Lectures, and Conferences, Dr. Donald Abrams
- Correspondence, Lectures, and Activities, Dr. Constance Wofsy
- Contracts
- Budgets and Finances
- Staff Meetings
- Committees
- SFGH Ward 84 Documents
- Other

Related Documents.

Scope and Contents
Records of the 6th International Conference on
AIDS
are included primarily because Volberding, along with UCSF's John Ziegler, was Co-Chair of this Conference, and nearly everyone
in the
AIDS
Program was involved in planning and conducting the conference. The records preserved here document the planning, development,
and course of the convention, with particular emphasis on the San Francisco community's involvement and the immigration issue
which hung over the entire conference (series 4).
The record group is organized into four series:
- Planning by Committees
- Other Planning, Administration, and Execution
- Primary Conference Staff
- United States Immigration Ban on Persons with
AIDS
.
