Abstract: Ian A. Smith was an employee of the California Portland Cement Company's Colton Plant from 1952-1977. Smith also conducted
research regarding the history of mining operations at Slover Mountain in Colton, California. The Ian A. Smith papers primarily
focus on the California Portland Cement Company's presence at Slover Mountain, but also contain material regarding Isaac Slover
and the history of the southwestern United States, particularly that of San Bernardino County, California. Two versions of
Smith's manuscript "Vanishing Mountain: A History of Mining Operations at Mt. Slover, Colton, California" are included. Additionally,
the collection includes photographs, notes, correspondence, press clippings, maps, and other material related to Smith's research.

Biographical Note
Ian A. Smith was born on October 15, 1920. He began working for the California Portland Cement Company's Colton Plant in 1952.
As an employee of the California Portland Cement Company, Smith held several different positions including Quarry Engineer
(1952-1953), Quarry Superintendent (1953-1958), General Quarry Superintendent of the Colton and Mojave Plants (1958-1968),
and Chief Mining Engineer (1968-1977). Disability ended his tenure with the California Portland Cement Company in 1977 after
nearly thirty years of service.

This collection contains materials created and collected by Ian A. Smith, an employee of the California Portland Cement Company's
Colton Plant from 1952-1977, as he researched the history of mining operations conducted at Mount Slover in Colton, California.
The collection primarily focuses on the California Portland Cement Company's mining operations at Mount Slover, but also contains
materials regarding Isaac Slover and the history of the southwestern United States, particularly that of San Bernardino County,
California. Two versions of Smith's manuscript, "Vanishing Mountain: A History of Mining Operations at Mt. Slover, Colton,
California", are included. Additionally, the collection includes photographs, notes, correspondence, press clippings, maps,
and other material related to Smith's research.
