This collection is arranged by material type. The flashdrive is kept with the physical copy of
Darling Conley...Dearest Dell and the digital materials have been uploaded to the library server.
These stories and compilations of correspondence were compiled by Capos C. "Chip" Culpepper II, the son of the letter writers,
Conley and Delphia Culpepper. Technical Sergeant Conley Edward Culpepper, United States Army Air Force (3/26/1924 - 8/30/2000)
was born in Pine Bluff, Arkansas and joined the military in 1943. Delphia Jane "Del" Ashley (12/5/1924 - 3/31/2014) was born
in Sheridan, Arkansas and met Conley when she was 16 years old. They courted and continued correspondence after Conley joined
the Army. They married on August 24, 1945.
T/Sgt. Culpepper trained at Camp Robinson in Arkansas, Amarillo, Texas, Kingman, Arizona, Sioux City Army Air Field in Iowa,
and Lincoln Army Air Field in Nebraska. In September 1944, he flew to England and was assigned to 349th Squadron, 100th Bomb
Group (Heavy), 13th Combat Bombardment Wing, 8th Army Air Force. Culpepper was an engineer and completed technical school
in the Army to become an airplane mechanic. He flew B-17s as an engineer and gunner for 35 combat bombing missions over Europe,
including Germany.

The physical materials were donated in a binder. They have been removed from the binder and it has been discarded for space.
This collection contains two books compiled by Capos C. "Chip" Culpepper based on the correspondence of his father, T/Sgt.
Conley E. Culpepper, USAAF and mother, Delphia J. Ashley during the Second World War. The first book,
Darling Conley...Dearest Dell, copyright 2015, is in both digital and physical form (binder). The other book,
Some War Stories Told in Short, Controlled Bursts, copyright 2017, is in digital form. The digital copies are on a flash drive which has also been digitally archived.
Darling Conley...Dearest Dell is not a direct transcription, edits made. Some spelling and dates are wrong, some index dates (date of correspondence where
name can be found) are wrong.
The content of
Darling Conley... is mostly transcriptions of letters in (mostly) chronological order, with several photographs and notations provided by the
author for context. The period covers June 23, 1943 until December 4, 1945, including Culpepper's military training and the
period of combat missions during the first part of 1945. There is little mention of the combat, however the author added detailed
mission reports for context. The photographs include pictures of people mentioned, certificates, and some other memorabilia.
Also included are a forward and an index, with names of people, places and things mentioned, as well as abbreviations.
The publication
Some War Stories... is written by the author in a narrative form, and also contains several photographs and scans for context.
An additional content note provides names of other service members mentioned, taken from the index of
Darling Conley... Of note are Culpepper's pilot, Lt. James C. Adair, USAAF and Delphia's cousin, Technical Sergeant Minor Fair Green, USAAF
who served with the 10th Air Force in the India-Burma theater of operations as an aerial gunner and earned the Distinguished
Flying Cross.
