Abstract: The Works Progress Administration (WPA) was established in 1935 as part of the New Deal. The Federal Writers Project (FWP), a branch of the WPA, provided work for unemployed writers, journalists, editors, and researchers. The WPA launched the Historical Survey of the Monterey Peninsula in 1936, under the sponsorship of the City of Monterey.
