Abstract: The Joseph R. Jehl, Jr. Field Notes, 1967-1974 consist of two volumes of field notes, drawings, and maps of expeditions along the western coast of Baja California (Mexico).

Content Description

Mostly handwritten (some typescript) field notes in two 3-ring binders. Includes notes, drawings and maps of scientific expeditions along the western coast of Baja California (Mexico) to gather data on the pelagic and shore birds of the area. Jehl also participated in explorations around Cabo San Lucas and the lower Gulf of California. In both volumes he includes observations of birds in San Diego, Point Loma, Balboa Park and the Tijuana River Valley. Mexican islands visited on various expeditions include Cedros, Todos Santos, San Miguel, San Geronimo, San Benitos, San Martin, Ascension, Guadalupe and the Coronados.

Biographical / Historical

Born on December 12, 1935 in New York City, Jehl attended Cornell University (A.B. 1957), and the University of Michigan (M.A. 1964, PhD 1967). He joined the San Diego Natural History Museum as curator of Birds and Mammals in 1967. From 1977 to 2001, he was a research biologist at the Carl L. Hubbs Sea World Research Institute; his major research interests were seabirds and shorebirds. He is currently a research associate in the Division of Birds at the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History.
