Abstract: The Marion Patterson interviews
contains recorded interviews of photographers, such as Edna Bullock, Pirkle Jones,
Ruth-Marion Baruch, Charis Wilson, and Julius Shulman, conducted by Patterson. Patterson is
a photographer whose worked with Ansel Adams, Dorothea Lange, and Minor White. She's also
taught photography at Foothill and De Anza Colleges and the University of California, Santa
Cruz Extension.

Marion Patterson (1933-) is a San Francisco based photographer. She began studying
photography in 1956 at the San Francisco Art Institute with Dorothea Lange and Minor White.
From 1958-1961 she worked for Virginia and Ansel Adams in Yosemite and remains associated
with the Adams family. From 1961-1964 she was assistant to the Photography Editor of Sunset
Magazine. While at Sunset, she prepared her first major exhibit, which was shown at the San
Francisco Museum of Modern Art in 1965. In 1968 she began teaching at Foothill and De Anza
Colleges, later becoming chair of the Foothill photography program. Patterson also taught
workshops for UC Santa Cruz Extension. Her photographs were published and exhibited
nationally and in Mexico, Belgium, Germany and the Netherlands.

This collection contains recorded interviews of photographers conducted by Patterson. The
photographers interviewed include Judy Dater, Charis Wilson, Edna Bullock, Meg Partridge,
Hansel Hagel, Al Weber, Seema Weatherwax, Pirkle Jones, Ruth-Marion Baruch, Don Worth, Ruth
Berhard, Julius Shulman and Brian Taylor. Included are 20 interviews on U-matic, VHS, and
video-cassette, 13 VHS tapes of lectures by Patterson, 4 audio cassettes of Patterson
photography symposium, 1 VHS tape of Patterson speech, 2 U-matic cassettes with Patterson
photos.
