Henstell was born in Los Angeles, California on October 3, 1945; BA, University of California Berkeley (1967); MA, University of Michigan (1970); MLS, University of California Los Angeles (1989); started freelance writing and producing in 1970; creative works include, Los Angeles, an illustrated history (1985) and Sunshine and wealth : Los Angeles in the twenties and thirties (1984).
