General Andrew Pickens (1739-1817), was a South Carolina soldier and legislator. After
serving in the American Revolution, Pickens became a member of the South Carolina
legislature, and later represented his state in the United States Congress. From 1785 to
1797, he served on a number of federal commissions appointed by the Congress and the
President to negotiate with the Cherokee and Creek Indians, particularly in relation to
conflicts on the Georgia border. The commissions negotiated treaties of Hopewell (1786), New
York (1790), Holson (1791) and Coleraine (1797).
A collection containing 51 items of official correspondence and papers of General Andrew
Pickens, chiefly those accumulated during his service as federal commissioner in 1785-1797.
Included is Pickens' correspondence with the Governor of South Carolina, Thomas Pinckney,
other federal commissioners, and the Indian chief Alexander McGillivray. The collection also
contains communications from the Congress and the War Department, and other related papers.
Also included are a few items related to the military career, business, and personal affairs
of Pickens, including documents pertaining to Andrew Pickens and Company. Correspondents
include James McHenry, Henry Knox, John Armstrong, Marinus Willett, and others. There are
also a few items related to Pickens' son, Andrew Pickens (1779-1838), Governor of South
Carolina in 1816-1818, including two letters to him from Thomas Flournoy (1820).
Processed by Huntington Library Staff, circa 1930. In 2020, Gayle Richardson created the
