Abstract: The Deloris L. Holt Collection contains documents from the life and career of Deloris L. Holt, an educator, author, and activist
who dedicated her career to sharing the history and achievements of Black Americans with the world. She was the founder of
Kinderpress and published books and teaching resources with an emphasis on Black History and Early Childhood Education. This
collection includes documents relating to her many publications, including original manuscripts, as well as extensive teaching
resources gathered during her 43-year teaching career and personal documents such as personal, activist, and business-related
corresponce, awards, and newspaper clippings. Material types include: print materials, cassette audio recordings, image slides,
and other mixed media.

The Deloris L. Holt Collection (1970-2022; undated) contains five boxes and 2.1 linear feet of documents from the life and
career of Deloris L. Holt (1934-2022), an educator, author, and activist who dedicated her life and career to sharing the
history and achivements of Black Americans with the world. Deloris had a 43-year long career as an elementary school teacher,
including 35 years in the Los Angeles Unified School District. She was also the founder of Kinderpress and published books
and teaching resources with an emphasis on Black History and Early Childhood Education. This collection includes documents
relating to her many publications, as well as extensive teaching resources gathered during her 43-year teaching career and
personal documents such as awards and correspondence. "Series I: Kinderpress and Other Publications" includes documents relating
to the publication of two of her books,
The ABC's of Black History and
Good Friends Come in All Shapes, and other teaching materials. This includes original manuscripts, drafts and final versions of teaching materials, and several
copies of the "Heritage" appointment book published by Kinderpress. "Series II: Teaching Materials" contains a number of additional
teaching resources she collected during her career, including lesson plans, games, and Black History printouts and biographies.
Finally, "Series III: Personal Documents" contains Holt's personal, activist, and business-related correspondences, as well
as awards, newspaper clippings, and her teaching credentials.

Biographical / Historical
Deloris L. Holt (1934-2022) was an activist, teacher, and author who published several books and a number of teaching materials.
In addition to a 43-year long career as a teacher (including 35 years in the LA Unified School district), she was also the
founder of Kinderpress and published several books and a number of teaching resources with an emphasis on Black History and
Early Childhood Education. She dedicated her life and career to educating students and the world at large on the history
and achievements of Black Americans.

This series contains text, graphic materials, and books relating to Deloris Holt's publications. The early documents cover
the publication of her first two books, "Good Friends Come in Many Shapes" and "The ABCs of Black History". Later documents
pertain to publications through her company, Kinderpress, including teaching materials for Black History and early childhood
education. Noteworthy documents include original manuscripts for "The ABCs of Black History" and drafts of learning modules
to accompany "Good Friends Come in Many Shapes". This series is arranged chronologically, and undated documents are grouped
with the associated publication.

This file contains three CDs with images. Each disc contains one image file, ordered from different repositories. The CD labeled
"NYHS INVOICE #10987" contains an image of a slave auction poster from the New York Historical Society. The CD labelled "The
Library of Congress Photo Duplication Service" contains a photograph titled "Contrabands" - an image of slaves including men,
women, and children. The CD from the Keeneland Library contains an image of Isaac Murphy (an American jockey) in racing silks.
Finally, the disc from NYPL shows an image of slaves picking cotton.
