Scope and Contents
Series 1 consists of a small amount of material from Gayanne Fietinghoff's professional files. It contains a manuscript describing
the making of the documentary
¡Si Se Puede!
in Arizona during Cesar Chavez's 1972 fast, and a statement by Chavez given at the end of the fast. It includes a few published
articles, newspaper clippings, flyers and brochures containing Fietinghoff's photographs, and two KPFK Radio program guides
in which Fietinghoff is credited as editor.

Arrangement
Arranged as received into two sub-series: 2.1: United Farm Workers, 1972-1976; 2.2: Farm Worker Life and Conditions, 1977.
Scope and Contents
Series 2, containing photographic prints, is arranged into two sub-series: the United Farm Workers series and the Farm Worker
Life and Conditions series. The UFW series photographs were taken from 1972 to 1975 when Fietinghoff was on staff of the
UFW and contain images of strikes, marches, boycotts, picketing, demonstrations, campaigning, and working in the fields.
Contains photos of places and events, such as UFW headquarters and properties La Paz in Keene, and Forty Acres and Agbayani
Village in Delano; Cesar Chavez's fast at Santa Rita Hall in Arizona; and Yemeni UFW organizer Nagi Daifullah's funeral.
Also consists of images of major figures and supporters of the UFW. The Farm Worker Life and Conditions series photographs
are the product of a 1977 personal project of Fietinghoff's, one that took her on a road trip through the Central Valley to
document the working and living conditions of farmworkers. The Photographs series contains some images by other photographers.
There is a designated folder of photos by Rick Tejada-Flores as well as a few photos interspersed throughout Sub-Series 2:1.
In addition, Sub-Series 2:1 contains photographs by filipino UFW photographer Sebastian Sahugan and Bill Ravensi. Original
folder groupings of material were left intact and do not necessarily reflect consecutive order. Similar material is dispersed
throughout the folders of each series.
Sub-series 2.1: United Farm Workers
1972-1976
Scope and Contents
Sub-Series 2.1, United Farm Workers, consists of images taken from 1972 to 1975 when Fietinghoff was a staff photographer
for UFW. Contains images of protest, including the march on E & J Gallo Winery, No on Proposition 22 demonstration, Farm
Bureau picket, demonstrations against Guimarra Ranch and Kovacevich Farms, picketing of Safeway and liquor stores selling
Gallo wine, and a women's demonstration inside the Teamsters building in Burlingame, where women with their children intended
to show the Teamsters that they were not intimidated by them and that they wanted UFW union representation. This sub-series
contains an Arizona folder with images from Cesar Chavez's 1972 fast at Santa Rita Hall, and farmworkers and children in onion
fields. Also contains photos of Farmworkers Weekend in Los Angeles; the 1973 UFW Convention; union campaigning; the funeral
of Yemeni UFW organizer Nagi Daifullah, who died from a beating by a Kern County Sheriff's deputy; UFW headquarters La Paz
in Keene; and Agbayani Village, the filipino retirement housing community located on the Forty Acres property in Delano.
This sub-series includes designated folders for the following UFW leaders and supporters: Cesar Chavez, Chris Hartmire, Juan
de la Cruz, Jerry Cohen, Dorothy Day, Joan Baez, and theater director Peter Brook, who collaborated with El Teatro Campesino.
Some of these people, and others who do not have a designated folder (such as Dolores Huerta, Pancho Botello, and Dennis Banks),
are pictured in other photographs interspersed throughout the sub-series. Also includes photos by Rick Tejada-Flores located
in one designated folder and a few dispersed throughout the sub-series. This sub-series contains photographs by manong Sebastain
Sahugan, veteran of AWOC (Agricultural Workers Organizing Committee, composed primarily of filipino farmworkers) and UFW,
who served as a photographer for UFW. There are also reproduced images from the film stock of Tejada-Flores's documentary
¡Si Se Puede!
Includes one photo by Bill Ravensi of the original group of filipino farmworker strikers taken at Agbayani Village in 1976.

Sub-series 2.2: Farm Worker Life and Conditions

Scope and Contents
Sub-Series 2.2, Farm Worker Life and Conditions, consists of photographs from an independent, personal project of Fietinghoff's
in which she traveled through the Central Valley in 1977 documenting farmworkers, mostly women at work and at home with their
families. These photos were taken in Fresno County and Salinas. Photos of labor picture farmworkers packing tomatoes, picking
lettuce, picking and packing grapes, and drying and rolling raisins. A few photos show children playing and working in the
fields. Includes photos of used containers of pesticides laying in the fields. This Sub-Series contains photos of farmworker
housing, which include images of grower-owned dilapidated barracks located in the middle of farm fields. Many photos show
mothers with their children, informal family portraits, a Fresno County day care center, and parents with children at Fairchild
Labor Camp. There are several images of farm machinery and a few photos of town streets and business and help wanted signage.
The Lenare folder contains photos of a Lenare community women's group painting houses for local families.

Series 3, Slides, contains color and black and white slides of demonstrations, marches, strikes, campaigns, worker housing
and living conditions, UFW leaders, strike violence and arrests, La Paz (UFW headquarters in Keene), and filipino retirement
community Agbayani Village. Includes images from other photographers, including Rick Tejada-Flores, Chris Sanchez, and Ernest
Lowe. Rick Tejada-Flores stated that if slides are not marked with Fietinghoff's or his initials then they could be from
