Biographical Note on Eugene A. Hessel

Eugene A. Hessel was a Presbyterian minister, seminary professor, and missionary in the Philippines (1947-1969). He was a graduate of the San Francisco Theological Seminary. He died in 2007 in Pasadena, California.

Biographical Note on José Rizal

José Protasio Rizal Mercado y Alonso Realonda, popularly known as José Rizal (1861-1896) was a Filipino nationalist at the end of the Spanish colonial period of the Philippines. He was executed by the Spanish colonial government for the crime of rebellion in 1896.

Scope and Content

This collection chiefly contains research notes by Eugene A. Hessel, most concerning his studies of José Rizal. Also included are letters, copies of articles, both by Hessel and others, newspaper clippings, printed ephemera, and some photographs. The collection also includes a printed copy of Hessel's 1958 dissertation, "The Religious Thought of José Rizal: its context and theological significance," presented to San Francisco Theological Seminary, and two drafts. There are also a few copies of items written by José Rizal.
