Scope and Content of Collection
The Scripps Institution of Oceanography Ship Drawings and Blueprints collection documents the design and planning of ships
owned, operated, or managed by the Institution through the 1960s. Some of the drawings and blueprints were created at Scripps,
while others were created by the U.S. Navy Bureau of Ships or design firms specializing in naval architecture and engineering.
The collection does not include designs for all vessels related to Scripps.
Historical Background
Since its early days, the Scripps Institution of Oceanography has owned and operated research ships. While a few of the vessels
were owned directly by the Institution, many have been managed through agreements with the Office of Naval Research, and with
funding support by the U.S. National Science Foundation. From its founding, Scripps Institute of Oceanography has owned, operated,
or managed over 26 research vessels or platforms.
The dates of operation for ships documented in this collection are: R/V Alexander Agassiz II (1962-1976), R/V Alpha Helix
(1965-1980), R/V Argo (1959-1970), R/V Horizon (1947-1969), R/V New Horizon (1978-2015), and R/V Orca (1956-1962).
