Defendant and appellant Maria Ruiz de Burton was the first published Mexican American author in the United States. The case concerns a land title dispute over Rancho Jamul in San Diego County.

Union ticket for the judicial election of October 1863. The following candidates for Supreme Court of California are listed: O. L. Shafter, John Curry, Lorenzo Sawyer, A. L. Rhodes, and S. W. Sanderson. Also listed are Joseph M. Cavis (for district judge, Fifth Judicial District); H. B. Underhill (for county judge); and John Swett (for superintendent of public instruction). Printed on the top of the ticket are the words: "The laws of the Constitution must be maintained."
