Series 3. Writings and Professional Papers 1952-1995, undated

Physical Description: Carton 1, folders 45-62; Cartons 2-4; Carton 5, folders 1-70

Arrangement

Divided into three parts: Numbered Publications; Numbered Professional Papers; and Unnumbered, Unpublished Writings, and Professional Projects.

Scope and Content Note

This series consists of Zinke’s published and unpublished writings, consulting work he did as a professional forester, and projects he did for the University of California, Berkeley and the California Agricultural Experiment Station.
The first part of the series is a run of numbered folders that contain Zinke's publications. These include articles, book chapters, conference proceedings, lectures, and reprints. The second part of the series is a run of numbered folders that contain what Zinke called his “Professional Papers.” These are materials related to the consulting work he did as a professional forester for clients such as Pacific Gas and Electric, lumber companies, and various state and federal government agencies. These files include correspondence, evaluations, expert testimony, meeting minutes, and reports. Parts one and two end in 1986 and are roughly in reverse chronological order. Please note that there are numbered bibliographies and lists in Series 2 that can help identify specific publications and professional papers. A few numbered items are missing. These may be found with writings in the third part of this series.
The third part of the series is a mix of unpublished writings and professional projects related to Zinke’s work as a forester and scholar. These are filed together in chronological order (undated folders are arranged alphabetically). These files include bibliographies, conference proceedings and programs, consultations, data and tables, drafts, figures and overheads, illustrations, lectures, maps, materials for meetings, newspaper clippings, notes, outlines, photographs and negatives, publicity, a publishing agreement, reports, reprints of articles published after 1986, research and research proposals, slide shows, symposia, talks, and workshops. There are also secondary source materials, correspondence, and memos. Of note are materials related to the Soil-Vegetation Survey; and forest, wildland, and environmental databases, microfiche, and documentation from California Agricultural Experiment Station Projects 1762, 2937, and 2595.
Folder titles often refer to general subject matter, not specific writings. When possible, duplicates were removed, and folders with materials related to specific publication numbers were merged with their corresponding numbered files. Still, there may be overlap between Zinke's numbered and unnumbered writings. There may also be overlap with course materials, as Zinke likely wrote some lectures in this series for his classes.

Series 7. Course Materials 1947-1992

Physical Description: Carton 11, folders 7-95 (Dendrology and Forestry 10); Carton 15; Carton 16, folders 1-29

Scope and Content Note

Consists of materials related to classes Zinke taught in the Forestry (and later, Forestry and Conservation) Department at the University of California, Berkeley and at other schools. Berkeley courses include Dendrology (alternately called Forestry 108 and Forestry 121); and Forestry 10, a topical introductory course that covered subjects such as Historic Relations of Society to Forest and Wildland Resources, Silviculture, Plant Succession, and Taxonomy of Trees. Other Berkeley classes include Forestry/Forestry and Conservation 47, 122, 125, and 198. These covered topics such as Water Balance, and Fundamentals of Soil Evaluation. Types of material include assignments, classroom handouts, correspondence and memos, evaluations, exams, general reference materials and articles by others, keys to exams, lab work, lectures, newspaper clippings, notes, outlines, and syllabi. There is also material from courses taught by other UC faculty. Please note that dates on files that contain reference materials reflect the years Zinke collected the articles, not the date the articles were published; some secondary sources date back as far as the late 19th/early 20th centuries.
This series also includes materials from University of California, Berkeley Cooperative Extension classes, Forestry Field Schools, United States Forest Service Soils Schools/Courses, and Site Seminars and Silviculture Classes that Zinke taught at other universities. Types of material include handouts, notes, outlines, papers, readings, talks, and syllabi.
There is some overlap with Zinke’s Writings and Professional Papers, as that series includes some lectures that he prepared for his classes.
Carton 11 includes materials from Dendrology and Forestry/Forestry and Conservation 10 classes. Carton 15 includes materials from Forestry/Forestry and Conservation 10, 120, 122, and 125. Carton 16 includes materials from Forestry/Forestry and Conservation 10, 122, 123, and 125, and non-UC Berkeley classes.
