Scope and Content Note
This series consists of Zinke’s published and unpublished writings, consulting work he did as a professional forester, and
projects he did for the University of California, Berkeley and the California Agricultural Experiment Station.
The first part of the series is a run of numbered folders that contain Zinke's publications. These include articles, book
chapters, conference proceedings, lectures, and reprints. The second part of the series is a run of numbered folders that
contain what Zinke called his “Professional Papers.” These are materials related to the consulting work he did as a professional
forester for clients such as Pacific Gas and Electric, lumber companies, and various state and federal government agencies.
These files include correspondence, evaluations, expert testimony, meeting minutes, and reports. Parts one and two end in
1986 and are roughly in reverse chronological order. Please note that there are numbered bibliographies and lists in Series
2 that can help identify specific publications and professional papers. A few numbered items are missing. These may be found
with writings in the third part of this series.
The third part of the series is a mix of unpublished writings and professional projects related to Zinke’s work as a forester
and scholar. These are filed together in chronological order (undated folders are arranged alphabetically). These files include
bibliographies, conference proceedings and programs, consultations, data and tables, drafts, figures and overheads, illustrations,
lectures, maps, materials for meetings, newspaper clippings, notes, outlines, photographs and negatives, publicity, a publishing
agreement, reports, reprints of articles published after 1986, research and research proposals, slide shows, symposia, talks,
and workshops. There are also secondary source materials, correspondence, and memos. Of note are materials related to the
Soil-Vegetation Survey; and forest, wildland, and environmental databases, microfiche, and documentation from California Agricultural
Experiment Station Projects 1762, 2937, and 2595.
Folder titles often refer to general subject matter, not specific writings. When possible, duplicates were removed, and folders
with materials related to specific publication numbers were merged with their corresponding numbered files. Still, there may
be overlap between Zinke's numbered and unnumbered writings. There may also be overlap with course materials, as Zinke likely
wrote some lectures in this series for his classes.
