Oration on the Life and Character of Gilbert Motier de Lafayette: Delivered at the Request of Both Houses of the Congress
of the United States, before them, in the House of representatives at Washington, on the 31st December, 1834
(Washington, D.C.: Gales and Seaton, 1835), Call number: 647436.
John Quincy Adams (1767-1848) was the sixth president of the United States and the son of John Adams, the second president
of the U.S., and Abigail Smith Adams. In addition, he served as U.S. minister to the Hague from 1794 to 1797, to Prussia from
1797 to 1801, to Russia from 1809 to 1814, and to Great Britain from 1815 to 1817. Adams was a U.S. senator from 1803 to 1808,
secretary of state from 1817 to 1825, and a member of the House of Representatives from 1831 to 1848.
The Marquis de Lafayette (Marie-Joseph-Paul-Yves-Roch Gilbert du Motier, 1757-1834) was a major general in the Continental
Army during the Revolutionary War; from 1824 to 1825, he toured the U.S. at the invitation of President James Monroe.
Collection contains three John Quincy Adams autograph letters or notes signed to: Benjamin Waterhouse, 1817 February 9 (HM
52212); John Adams, 1817 December 26 (HM 52213); and Mrs. W.D. Lewis, 1832 April 8 (HM 52215). Also present is one Marquis
de Lafayette, New York, autograph letter signed to Joseph Lewis and James Kilmer, Philadelphia, 1824 September 22 (HM 52214).
John Quincy Adams' letter to Benjamin Waterhouse is written from Ealing, London, and discusses British politics and an attack
on the Prince Regent George IV's coach in London; his note to John Adams concerns finances and the bankruptcy of Robert Bird.
Lafayette's letter relates to his upcoming visit to Philadelphia.
This finding aid was created in 2022 by Melissa Haley as part of the American Presidential Papers Project with enhanced description
of the presidential material present. The items had been assembled physically and arranged by Huntington Library former staff.
