Collection Scope and Content

The Captain Robert W. McAllister photograph collection of the Panama Canal (SAFR 22341, P99-044) consists of 5 photographic albums on Capt. McAllister service as Panama Canal pilot from 1953 to 1978.

The collection is made up of several 3-ring photobinders and are generally titled by Capt. McAllister such as "Photos of Some Ships That I Have Been a Pilot of in the Panama Canal, 1953-1975." There are 2 photobinders titled "An Album of Ships That Frequent the Panama Canal by a Pilot, 1953-1978. Volumes 1 and 2." Another photobinder is titled "Captain Robert W. McAllister, Panama Canal Pilot, From His Brother Pilots." Finally, there is a postcard album extensively annotated by Capt. McAllister including early images of the Panama Canal construction. The postcard album with early images of the canal construction is the most historically significant of the albums.
