The African American Press Photographs Collection (1944-1999; undated) contains two boxes of 237 black-and-white and 2 color
photographs related to news stories that predominantly featured African Americans. A majority of the images measure 8 x 10"
and have detailed news agency captions on the back. Some images also include the headlines or clippings that the photographs
were used with. Included are images related to a wide variety of topics such as pop culture; local interest stories; African
American life and education; religion; politics; celebrity news; awards; protests; and more. Images feature: local recreational
centers; parades; concerts; elementary and high school students; classrooms; hospitals; churches and religious events; debutante
balls; construction; pro drag racing; National Black Conference Reflection Day; supermarkets; restaurants; parks and playgrounds;
vocational schools; building fires; and others. Also included are headshots and images of musicians; athletes; actors; comedians;
and activists such as: Natalie Hinderas, Zaida Coles, Dexter Scott King, Patti LaBelle, Charlie Mitchell, Sam McCullum, Arthur
Ashe, Willie Davis, Jimmy Walker, Lionel Hampton, Flip Wilson, Levar Burton, Carl Weathers, Ray Charles, and others. A majority
of the images were taken in Florida for the Miami Herald, St. Petersburg Times, and a news outlet located in Broward County;
as well as images taken in Colorado for the Denver Post; Massachusetts for the Boston Herald; Washington State for the Seattle
Times; and images from Missouri, Minnesota, North Carolina, Georgia, and other cities in the United States. There are also
a few images taken in Gabon, Ethopia, Ghana, Niger, Zimbabwe, and DR Congo; as well as one image taken in the Bahamas, and
one image taken in Rome.
