Abstract: The Los Angeles Philharmonic Archives is the institutional memory of the Los Angeles Philharmonic Association (LAPA), providing continuity between its past and its future. The Archives serves Philharmonic staff and outside researchers through collecting, preserving, and making available materials that document the full spectrum of activities throughout the history of the Los Angeles Philharmonic dating to its founding in 1919. Taken as a whole, the collection provides a unique and richly detailed perspective on the Los Angeles Philharmonic’s impact on 20th and 21st century music and society, its contributions to the cultural heritage of Los Angeles and Southern California, and its performance history in associated venues including the Hollywood Bowl and the Walt Disney Concert Hall.

Scope and Content of Collection

The bulk of the holdings of the Los Angeles Philharmonic Archives include (1) records of the Los Angeles Philharmonic Association, and (2) special collections. LAPA records include departmental records, venue records, concert programs, photographs, concert recordings, posters, and other materials created through the activities of the Los Angeles Philharmonic. Special collections comprise materials related to the Los Angeles Philharmonic that have been donated to the Archives or otherwise created outside of the operations of LAPA. Examples here include independent concert recordings, radio broadcasts, and the Betty Freeman collection. In 2019 the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors transferred the operation of The John Anson Ford Theatre to LAPA. As a result, the Los Angeles Philharmonic Archives acquired stewardship of the Ford Theatre’s historical records, which include photographs, programs, and performance recordings. The Ford Theatre Historical Collection is now a part of the Los Angeles Philharmonic Archives’ special collections.
