Organizational History
The Black Scholar: Journal of Black Studies and Research (TBS) is an interdisciplinary journal that addresses cultural, political,
and social issues of concern to Black Americans and other peoples of African descent across the world. It is published by
the Black World Foundation, a non-profit educational organization. TBS was founded in the San Francisco Bay Area in 1969 by
poet and scholar Dr. Robert Chrisman, sociologist and activist Dr. Nathan Hare, and printer Allan Ross. Both Chrisman and
Hare participated in the 1968 strike that fought to establish a Black Studies department at San Francisco State University.
Chrisman served as publisher of the journal and shared various editing duties with Dr. Robert L. Allen, Professor of African
American and Ethnic Studies at the University of California, Berkeley. Allen joined TBS in 1974, and Hare left in 1975. According
to the journal's website, TBS relaunched with new editors in 2012, after Chrisman and Allen retired. For more information,

Correspondence in A-Z files was sorted by year. Most letters were filed by last name or organization, but some were filed

and subscription ad exchanges, permissions, reprints, requests for materials, and acceptance and rejection letters were filed
separately, but many are in the A-Z correspondence files. Both Chrisman and Robert Allen served as editors of the journal,
so there is likely overlap with Allen's correspondence. There are also letters to Hare and to and from Associate Editor Janice
Bevien and Managing Editor, JoNina Abron. Individual correspondents were listed when they were called out in the initial donors

maintained, but it is not completely accurate. These files are composed of the working documentation for various issues of

and final mock-ups. Incoming and outgoing correspondence is primarily with Robert Chrisman, JoNina Abron, and Associate Editor
