Biographical / Historical

Information on Timothy S. Ko's life is sparse in newspaper records. He graduated from Hanford Union High School in 1928. Shortly after finishing high school, Ko was employed at a large department store in Salt Lake City, and in October 1930 he is noted as married, with an infant daughter. By 1935, he had returned to California to live in Modesto, but then the trail on him runs cold.

Scope and Contents

A unique collection of vernacular photographs, some with manuscript captions, documenting the high school and early adulthood years of a Chinese-American student named Timothy S. Ko. Numerous photographs in the present album are inscribed to him, almost all by first name only, but with a single inscribed photo reading, "To Tim S. Ko." The photographs include pictures of Ko, portraits of his school friends, images of Ko and various people in agricultural settings, a few shots of him working on what appear to be an almond farm and an apricot orchard, a photo of the "'Johanna Smith' World's Most Famous Gambling Ship," a scene from a parade featuring the float for Fresno State College, beach scenes, and more, with a handful of shots of Ko visiting China. A pair of photographs picture Ko with his championship-winning basketball team; according to the caption written on one of them, the team won the Kings County and the San Joaquin Valley championships in 1926.
