Also gives explanation as to why there may be particulates in the water. Item 2: Letter dated 25 June 1873. From George Davidson to R.B. Woodward. Letter talking about the general weather patterns and wind in San Francisco throughout the year. Item 3: Letter dated 27 June 1873. From George Davidson to R.B. Woodward. Letter reminding Mr. Woodward that he agreed to support a book being done on whales with a twenty-five dollar donation and asking Mr. Woodward to double that amount. Mr. Davidson says this work will be the authority on this whale species. Item 4: Letter dated 3 July 1873. From George Davidson to R.B. Woodward. Letter informing Mr. Woodward he went by the gardens hoping to meet with him but it did not happen. Mr. Davidson hopes to meet with Mr. Woodward and wishes him luck in building the aquarium. Item 1: Letter dated 26 May 1874. From the New York Department of Public Parks, Office of Menagerie [Central Park Mengerie?] [Signature illegible] to R.B. Woodward. Letter informing Mr. Woodward that his article has been passed on to the "American Sportsman" publication. Also writes that it would be a good idea to import a large number of animals because there will always be a market for them. Mr. Woodward is asked if he is willing to donate a sea lion and the failure of the legislature to appropriate funds for the purchasing of animals. Response on back notes that Mr. Woodward is willing to donate a seal to Central Park if they can get it shipped for free. Also notes Mr. Woodward is willing to get them white swans[?] that they could sell. Finally, Mr. Woodward thanks them for sending his article to The Sportsman and says he wants 100 copies if they publish on his Gardens. Item 2: Letter dated 10 July 1874. From the New York Department of Public Parks, Department of the Menagerie [Central Park Menagerie?] [Signature illegible] to R.B. Woodward. Letter informing Mr. Woodward that they do not know anyone with fallow deer. The author also notes it has been suggested to house the swan at Lonon[?] Gardens. Finally it is noted that they will contact people who may be interested in purchasing seals. Response on the verso notes that Mr. Woodward would gladly accept fallow deer if they find any. It is also noted that he [Mr. Woodward] has a man taking seals to Europe and if he goes by New York he will have him give them one. Finally, Mr. Woodward asks what the value of a Rocky Mountain Sheep in New York. Item 3: Letter dated 21 July 1874. From the New York Department of Public Parks, Department of the Menagerie [Central Park Menagerie?] [signature illegible] to R.B. Woodward. Letter informing Mr. Woodward they will accept his offer of a sea lion. It also informs Mr. Woodward that they have someone interested in purchasing a seal and tells him about other articles in The Sportsman on other gardens. Response on front asks how much an elephant is worth and response on verso asks how many sea lions they want.

Item 3: Letter dated 30 June 1873. From the Fourth of July Committee on Hall and Decorations to R.B. Woodward. Letter acknowledging Mr. Woodward's offer to use the Gardens and Pavillion for the Fourth of July celebrations. They state the committee was in favor but the military commanders were not and so they decline the use of the gardens and pavillions and instead will use the Horticultural Hall on Stockton Street.

Barnum visited him and mentioned that Mr. Woodward had sold him some sea lions. It is mentioned that enclosed is a letter from P.T. Barnum [Not included in letter]. The letter mentions the various animals Mr. Hagenbach has sold and lists his inventory of animals. Mr. Hagenbach also describes how he has safetly sent many animals to America including a bunch that P.T. Barnum purchased. Mr. Woodward [response glued onto letter] agrees to send him the sea lions as he is already planning on sending some to New York and London. Mr. Woodward also says that he would be interested in Zebras, African Ostriches, and rhinoceros.

Letter asking again for copies of the catalogue of Japanese minerals. Also informs him that Mr. Kaderly has just returned from an expedition and gathered more fossils and minerals. Mr. Woodward confirms that the copies were sent a week ago. Item 4: Letter dated 2 July 1873. From Jacques Kaderly to R.B. Woodward. Mr. Kaderly offers them for $1200. Mr. Woodward's response is noted as he would not be willing to pay more than six hundred dollars for the collections. Item 6: Letter dated 16 March 1874. From Jacques Kaderly to R.B. Woodward. Letter asking what Mr. Woodward's intentions are for the mineral collections of Mr. Kaderly currently on display at the gardens. Letter informing Mr. Woodward that he is the man who caught all the sea lions that someone sold him and asking if he would go into direct contract with him. Mr. Woodward's response is that he is willing to pay the same for the first sea lions he gets but it would be twenty-five cents per pound later. A second response is written out as to explain that the more sea lions he has the cheaper he has to buy them. A third response is noted stating the same thing.[Part of this response is crossed out] Item 2: Letter dated 31 May 1873. From Frank Thompson to R.B. Woodward. Letter informing Mr. Woodward they have only been able to catch one sea lion because of the storms around the Island. Mr. Thompson says they will be able to catch five or six more once the storms pass but that they will not be able to ship them until after the 11th of June. Item 3: Letter dated 8 June 1873. From Frank Thompson to R.B. Woodward. Letter introducing Mr. Woodward to Mr. Brown [Mr. Thompson's business partner]. Mr. Thompson also explains that they were only able to catch two sea lions because of the weather and tells him how much it cost to catch them. He also says he is willing to make another trip to catch more if enough incentive is given. Item 4: Letter dated 27 June 1873. From Frank Thompson to R.B. Woodward. Letter acknowleding receipt of Mr. Woodward's letter and informing him that they are taking another expedition to catch more sea lions and he will send them by the middle of next month. Mr. Woodward's response is noted on verso to telegraph as soon as he has more sea lions. Item 5: Letter dated 19 July 1873. From Frank Thompson to R.B. Woodward. Letter informing Mr. Woodward that he is sending more sea lions to San Francisco with his partner Mr. Brown. He then explains that five of the ones they caught had died and all the males were cut up from fighting. Finally he explains that he heard there are elephant seals in San Diego and could go catch some if Mr. Woodward is interested. Item 6: Letter dated 20 August 873. From Frank Thompson to R.B. Woodward. Letter asking Mr. Woodward if he is interested in gravel that Mr. Thompson gets from the area between Santa Catalina Island and Santa Barbara. He offers to sell the gravel to Mr. Woodward for eight dollars a ton. He also describes seeing a mermaid in a man's collection. Mr. Thompson describes the mermaid as having the face and upper body of a monkey, long arms, and a fish tail. He states he thinks it is a fake but asks if Mr. Woodward is interest in purchasing it. Mr. Woodward's response is noted on back asking for a sample of the gravel and stating that they already have a mermaid but if this one looks different he is willing to purchase it as long as it does not cost too much.
