[Identification of item]. Hutch Stevens correspondence, The Huntington Library, San Marino, California.
Immediate Source of Acquisition
Gift of Jeanne L. Browne, March 1988.
Hutch Stevens was a miner and prospector who spent several years moving to different mining camps throughout the western United
States. He disappeared in December 1907 and was found dead in May 1908.
The collection consists of correspondence written by Hutch Stevens and his siblings (including Matilda Stevens Cooper), that
deal with family events both before and after his death. The letters discuss several mining towns and/or camps, including
Alhambra Mine, Altman, Cripple Creek, Divide, Leadville, Victor, Geneva Mine, Colorado; Fitting, Lovelock, Nevada; Lead, South
Dakota; and Warren, Idaho. There are also typed transcripts of most of the letters, although they contain significant omissions
of text; the originals should be consulted.
Processed by Brooke M. Black in 2002. In February 2024, she created a finding aid.
Arranged chronologically.
Letters published, in 1992, under the title of His restless longing: A prospector's story, edited by Jeanne L. Browne.
