Biographical / Historical

Franz Hölzlhuber was an Austrian visitor to the United States from 1856 to 1860, who stayed for a while in Milwaukee before he traveled around Wisconsin, Canada and the Mississippi River Valley. While traveling he sketched his observations and took notes on what he saw. Some of his drawings were published in various periodicals including Harper's monthly. After his return to Austria, he used his sketches for lectures and further drawings and paintings.

Scope and Contents

Fifty-four drawings by Franz Hölzlhuber of clothing, tools, weapons, instruments, and hides used by Native Americans, as well as portraits of individual Native American men and women (Menomonee, Chippewa, Winnebago, Comanche, Oneida, Blackhawk, Ponca, Sioux, Pawnee, Concaw, Oshkosh, Ottoe) in Minnesota, Michigan, Wisconsin, and Iowa. Hölzlhuber titled the drawings on the front (in German) and there is text on the verso of the drawings (also in German). Also present is the original housing of the drawings, a volume that was entitled "Costüm-Bilder waffen und Geräthshaften einiger Indianerstamme im Nordwesten America." Box 6 contains photocopies of the German text on the versos of the drawings. There are no English translations.

Processing Information

These drawings were originally bound in a volume. For conservation reasons they have been taken out and housed as separate items. The drawing titles in the container list are given in English; most of them are just descriptions of the drawings and not necessarily English translations of Hölzlhuber's titles on the drawings. Processed by Brooke M. Black in January 2014. In 2021, she created a finding aid.
