Biographical / Historical Notes
August Huchting (1848-1912) emigrated from Germany to Ventura, California in the 1870s. He married Maria de Gonzales, and
in 1884 they moved to Meadowlark, California. August’s son Henry moved to the San Marcos area in 1901. Henry’s son Carl became
a photographer, tour guide and composer, and another son, Homer, served in Europe in World War II.
This collection contains family papers of the Huchtings, particularly WWII correspondence from Homer Huchting and the business
ventures of Carl Huchting in the 1930s and 1940s. Carl’s business ventures included writing music, running a tourist guide
service, and professional aerial photography. Other papers include newspaper articles about major family events and some papers
of August Huchting.
