Administrative History

The California Supreme Court Historical Society was founded in 1989 as a non-profit public benefit corporation to serve the interests of the bench and bar, the academic community and the general public. The Society is dedicated to preserving, documenting and promoting California judicial history through publications, academic research and educational initiatives. While the history of the California Supreme Court has been the focus of the Society’s efforts, it has also provided a forum for more broadly addressing the state’s judicial and legal past. The Society publishes the annual journal, California Legal History (formerly the California Supreme Court Historical Society Yearbook), as well as a biannual newsletter and periodic releases of monographic works. Working with judges, lawyers, historians, archivists and private and public agencies, the Society sponsors educational programming, and assists in the creation of exhibits and oral histories, and in the acquisition of historical judicial materials.

Scope and Content of Collection

The California Supreme Court Historical Society records consist of 6.12 cubic feet of materials in 13 archives boxes, comprising organizational correspondence, minutes, reports, by-laws, institutional notes, and a smaller number of Society photographs and in-house publication reproductions. The collection spans the years 1980 to 1993, with the bulk of the material dating from the founding of the California Supreme Court Historical Society in 1989 to 1993.
