Abstract: A. C. Heidrick, born in Austria, enlisted in the U. S. Army in 1902, and was stationed in the Philippines. He then worked
as a field photographer in Texas. In 1908 he was stationed at the Presidio of Monterey. Leaving the Army in 1910, he established
himself as a professional photographer, as well as the Presidio of Monterey's official photographer. Heidrick particularly
enjoyed and developed the use of the wide-angle or panoramic camera to record large group gatherings, celebrations and views.
The camera operated on a spring clock-work mechanism, which moved the camera in a half circle. One of his more humorous panoramas
documents the arrival of the Pacific Fleet in Monterey in 1919. Different versions of the photograph show airplanes in various
unusual positions in the sky. They were added features.
