Biographical / Historical
LeRoy Reuben Hafen (1893-1985) was the state historian at the State Historical Society of
Colorado for 30 years from 1924 to 1954. Hafen was born in Nevada and educated in Utah and
California; while in college Hafen married Ann Woodbury (1893-1970), a poet, author, and
fellow historian. Hafen was the author of numerous articles and books on the history of the
American West; he edited, in collaboration with Ann Hafen: The Far West and the Rockies (15
volumes) and was the editor of the ten-volume collection titled, The Mountain Men and the
Fur Trade of the Far West. Hafen was a specialist in Colorado history, the fur trade, and
overland routes to the West.
Scope and Contents
A collection of approximately 5,000 items from 1924 to 1975, which consists of research
materials, journals, manuscripts, correspondence, and notes related to LeRoy Reuben Hafen's
works on the American West. A substantial portion of the collection relates to The Mountain
Men and the Fur Trade of the Far West (1965 to 1972), and includes materials on fur traders,
trappers, Native Americans, trails, and the history of the West, as well as correspondence
with contributors to the 10 volume series. The collection also includes reviews and material
on Western History Conferences.
