Abstract: The Chowchilla Kidnapping Newspaper Clippings Collection contains newspaper documentation of the kidnapping of twenty-six
school children and their bus driver in Chowchilla, California on July 15, 1976. The newspaper articles document the kidnapping,
the rescue, and the trial of the accused.
The collection is open for research.

Scope and Content of Collection
The Chowchilla Kidnapping Newspaper Clippings Collection contains newspaper documentation of the kidnapping of twenty-six
school children and their bus driver in Chowchilla, California on July 15, 1976. The newspaper articles document the kidnapping,
the rescue, and the trial of the accused. The trial began on October 27, 1976 and ended in December 15, 1977 with the conviction
of the perpetrators Frederick Woods, Richard Schoenfeld, and James Schoenfeld. They were sentenced to life without parole
for the crime. Their sentence was subsequently commuted to life with possibility of parole on January 15, 1981.
The collection is arranged into one series: Series I, The Chowchilla Kidnapping, 1976-1981.
