Scope and Content
The W.S. McBirnie Collection consists of 51 pamphlets written by conservative radio host and theologian William Steuart McBirnie
during the 1970s and 1980s. On his radio program “Voice of Americanism,” McBirnie was known for being an ardent opponent of
liberalism and communism, and these views carried over into his self-published pamphlets on the dangers these issues presented
to the American public. McBirnie founded the Church of Glendale in 1961 as well as the California Graduate School of Theology
in 1968, offering doctoral degrees to working pastors, which some critiques found to be quite controversial at the time. Topics
included in the pamphlets of the W.S. McBirnie collection include election predictions, the energy crisis of the 1970’s, fluoridation
dangers, challenges to American ideals of freedom, Soviet threats, and Big Brother. This collection is unique in its scope
and content for providing a case study into the mind and views of a dynamic American personality during the rise of neoconservatism
in the United States during the 1970’s and 1980’s.
