Biographical / Historical
John Bandini Winston was born in August 1863. He was the son of Dr. James Brown Winston and
Marguerite Bandini Winston. He married Carolina Maria Couts in 1887. She was the daughter of
Cave Johnson Couts and Maria Ysidora Barbara Bandini. The couple had three children: John
Bandini Winston, Jr., Carolina Winston, and Marguerite Y. Winston. Carolina Winston married
Dr. Sven Richard Lokrantz, a Swedish medical doctor.
Scope and Contents
This collection consists of business correspondence, ephemera, estate and land papers
related to the Bandini, Couts, and Winston families. Boxes 1-3 contain correspondence
primarily addressed to John Bandini Winston and his wife, Carolina Maria (Couts) Winston.
John Winston was an agent in the real estate industry and there are letters from attorneys,
banks, dealers, land companies, and occupants. The subject matter in the earlier
correspondence concerns the litigation of the heirs and successors of the late Cave Johnson
Couts for the ownership of the Buena Vista rancho. Box 4 consists of estate papers and
letter books belonging to John Bandini Winston spanning from 1892 through 1922. Box 5
consists of land titles to various lots in Los Angeles County, California. There is also
some ephemera and material related to Sven Lokrantz and his wife, Carolina Winston Lokrantz.
There are two oversize items: an account book for property in Los Angeles and a photograph
of the Tuna Club banquet in 1937.
