Scope and Contents

Dr. Shirley Kennedy was an integral member of the University of Califoria Santa Barbara, both as a student and as faculty. She co-founded the campus' Black Studies Department, co-founded and served as Acting Director and Community Affairs Coordinator for the Center for Black Studies, and was a longtime lecturer in the Black Studies Department.

This series contains course materials, department and program documents, event materials, general correspondence, and other miscellaneous materials related to Shirley Kennedy's time as a faculty member at UC Santa Barbara.

Course materials may include course readers, reference materials, syllabi, assignment and exam instructions, and lecture notes for various Black Studies courses. Department and program materials may include administrative and financial documents, meeting minutes, event planning and promotion, training, and campus-wide memos outside of her teaching capacity, including her work with the Black Studies Department, the Center for Black Studies, the Combined Black Studies Fund, and with various student organizations.
