Abstract: VHS tape featuring footage of gay activist and performer José Sarria’s 1992 performance of “Carmen” in Hayward, California,
interspersed with interview footage. Both the performance and interview footage were taken in 1992 by filmmaker and playwright
Joseph Castel, who would go on to produce the film Nelly Queen: The Life and Times of José Sarria (2020). In 1996, Castel
made this cut of the footage for the activist and theater director and actor Hank Tavera, with whom Castel was producing a
play about Sarria for the Mission Cultural Center in San Francisco.

Scope and Content of Collection
VHS tape featuring footage of gay activist and performer José Sarria’s 1992 performance of “Carmen” in Hayward, California,
interspersed with interview footage. Both the performance and interview footage were taken in 1992 by filmmaker and playwright
