Biography/Administrative History

Many of the clippings were compiled during the 1930s and 1940s. These were incorporated into the present file dating from the 1950s, with the staff making substantial additions until the file was closed to clippings from the Monterey County Herald in 1995. Subsequent articles and obituaries published in the Herald from January 1, 1995, through June 30, 2003, may be found in the Herald Index on the Libraryʼs catalog. With the exception of the Monterey Herald (available on microfilm), various other print sources are routinely added to the collection.

Scope and Content of Collection

The collection consists of clippings, excerpts and transcriptions from newspaper, magazine, book and journal articles collected by the Libraryʼs staff. The primary source of news clippings (through 1994) is the Monterey Herald, but many clippings derive from other local materials. These sources include the Carmel Cymbal and Pine Cone, Game ? newsletters; pamphlets; press releases; Library reference notes; and typescript copies of the WPAʼs 1937 Historical Resources Survey of the Monterey Peninsula. Arranged alphabetically by subject and numerically by assigned sheet number within folder, and in a rough chronological order by date of article, except for biographical files. Substantial portions of the files consist of biographical materials on regional authors, artists, and community leaders.
