Scope and Content

Papers of American civil engineer, J. Foster Flagg (1835-1928). Includes maps of North and South America, documents relating to J. Foster Flagg, Flagg family genealogy, and four late 19th and early 20th century photograph albums of Latin America and the West Indies. The Latin American albums relate mainly to Mexico (Vera Cruz, Queretaro, Guadalajara, Colima, Mazatlan, and other locations), as well as San Antonio, Texas, New Orleans, and Peru, with images of buildings, street scenes, ports, railway lines, and people. The Flagg family were close friends of the Chase family of Santa Barbara, California, where he spent his last years.
The papers also include field notebooks (1868-1896) on various work projects, including the Great Western Railway, the Mexican National Railroad, the pipe works of the New York Steam Company, engineering notes on the sewage and septic systems of Europe, notes on the Spanish language, and six carte-de-visite portraits of professional acquaintances, identified in verso.
