Biographical / Historical

Hiroshi Sugiyama (1917-1945), grew up in the Golden Gate Park area of San Francisco, California. He had 3 siblings: Kazuo, Miwako, and Shinobu. Shinobu, also known as Pete, was incarcerated at Topaz Concentration Camp before serving in the 442nd Regimental Combat Team. Hiroshi was drafted in 1941, and he served in the 442nd Regimental Combat Team as a medic. Based on correspondence and memorabilia, it is known that Sugiyama was briefly stationed at Camp Grant in Illinois and Camp Butner in North Carolina during points of his training and military service. In 1945, the 442nd RCT was engaged in Italy. A rifleman was wounded by German fire, and Sugiyama rushed to his side to administer aid. A German sniper disregarded Sugiyama's red cross brassard and killed him instantly. For his service and sacrifice, Technician Fifth Grade Hiroshi Sugiyama was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart and Bronze Star Medal.
