Scope and Content of Collection

A selection of family papers from the personal library collection of newspaper publisher James S. Copley. Copley (1916-1973) and his wife, Helen K. Copley (d. 2004), were prominent conservative figures in the world of American journalism, and were well-known locally in San Diego in philothropic circles. Copley was CEO of the Copley Press, publisher of the San Diego Union-Tribune newspaper. These materials represent only a small fraction of the scope of his professional activities and daily life, but they do provide some documentation on his schooling, family life and travels, and participation in world affairs and events.

A set of three large scrapbooks document his memorial service in 1973.

Arranged in five series: 1) EARLY CORRESPONDENCE OF JAMES S. COPLEY; 2) INDEXED CORRESPONDENCE; 3) FAMILY PAPERS; 4) EVENTS - PHOTOGRAPHS AND MEMORABILIA; and 5) PHOTOGRAPH ALBUMS.

Ms. Copley's incoming correspondence was neatly alphabetically arranged in custom boxes and binders, however, the Library processed the A-C and H-L binders at a different time from the others, so the alphabetical ranges are split across boxes and the style of processing differs. All letters are alphabetically arranged, but not all are listed by individual correspondent in this finding aid. Consult the index for the list of authors. Materials are largely superficial and professional in nature (holiday cards, thank-yous, acknowledgements by public figures).
