Suzanne Roberts Biography
Suzanne Roberts (1949-1986) was a lifelong resident of Downey, California. She graduated from California State University
Long Beach with a BA in Sociology and a California Partial Standard Elementary Credential in 1974. Roberts worked as a teacher's
aid for Long Beach Unified School District as well as a teaching assistant for Downey Unified School District prior to becoming
a third grade teacher at Roosevelt Elementary School in Paramount, California in 1976. Roberts was a former President of the
Teachers Association of Paramount and two time delegate of the National Education Association. Along with being a teacher,
Roberts was also a women's rights activist and member of the Long Beach Chapter National Organization for Women (NOW). In
February 1986, she was awarded the Long Beach NOW's Susan B. Anthony Award- an award that is given out annually to "a feminist
who, through her actions, has contributed significantly to the advancement of women's rights" (Susan B. Anthony Award program,
February 15, 1990). Roberts passed away after a brief illness on April 25, 1986 at the age of 37.
