Abstract: Includes records assembled by Michael J. Hayes, a freight clerk working at Southern Pacific Railroad's Lombard station in
Napa County, California during the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s. Some of these document his career with Southern Pacific. Also includes
select records of L.E. Proudfit, Road Foreman of Engines, San Francisco District, 1957-1964, J.R. Hickey, Bayshore roundhouse,
and St. Helena freight agent J. Closterman, 1959-1983.

Biography
Michael Hayes was a train clerk in the Southern Pacific freight department at Lombard station in Vallejo between 1969 and
1982.

Scope and Contents
Material for the San Francisco District includes employee time claims and reports about accidents, fires, and injuries. Bayshore
roundhouse records include lists of employee birthdays and train movements. Lombard station (Vallejo) records were collected
by Michael Hayes while he was a train clerk for the station and include: clippings, consists, seniority lists, and station
files which have detailed information about the requirements of the job that Hayes performed. St. Helena station records include
applications for lease and licenses and locomotive enquiries.
Additional Southern Pacific freight office records are arranged at the end of this series by type of material and include
or subject and include descriptions of accidents, blank freight forms, correspondence with Gerald Best and Guy Dunscomb about
locomotive photographs, personnel and seniority lists, and lists of locomotives and trains.
