The collection was a gift to San Francisco Maritime Museum from Dr. M. P. Kaufman on December 15, 1956. The collection was transferred to Golden Gate National Recreation Area in 1977 and accessioned in February 1985 (GOGA-00789) from the J. Porter Shaw Library collection and then transferred to San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park in September 1988 (SAFR-00001, blanket accession.)

Historical or Biographical Note

Dr. Morris Philip Kaufman (1885-1968) was head of the United States Bureau of Education hospital at Fort Gibbon near Tanana, Alaska. In 1925, Dr. Kaufman traveled aboard STAR OF ALASKA (built 1886; ship, 3m) from San Francisco, California, to Alaska.

Collection Scope and Content

The Dr. Morris P. Kaufman photographs, circa 1925-1935, (SAFR 24265, P80-004a) are comprised mainly of photographs of Kaufman's 1925 voyage to Alaska aboard STAR OF ALASKA (built 1886; ship, 3m). The collection has been processed to the item level and is open for use.
Contains photographs of views aboard STAR OF ALASKA (built 1886; ship, 3m) during a 1925 voyage from San Francisco, California, to Alaska, as well as photographs of other Alaska scenes, circa 1925-1935. There are 29 photographic images in 90 physical forms (29 nitrate negatives, 29 preservation contact interpositives, 29 preservation contact negatives, and 3 black-and-white photographic prints). Dr. Morris P. Kaufman is possibly the photographer.
Some of the STAR OF ALASKA deck views include people, one of whom is identified as artist Gordon Grant. Other photographs in the collection include CENTENNIAL (built 1875; barkentine, 4m) under tow in Alitak Bay and salt being loaded on SOPHIE CHRISTENSON (built 1901; schooner, 4m). Also includes views of MARTHA ANGELINE (riverboat; U.S. Bureau of Education, Medical Service) and the U.S. Bureau of Education hospital at Fort Gibbon where Dr. Morris P. Kaufman was employed. In addition, there is one photograph of fishing activities aboard a lighter as well as a photograph of the fishing boat WAYNE.
