Collection consists of letters of introduction, invitations and responses, and newspaper clippings in French and English regarding the Presidential campaign of 1876, all contained in a scrapbook.

Biographical Note

Edward F. Noyes (1832 October 3 - 1890 September 4) was Minister to France, a retired general, and a Republican governor of Ohio.
Born in Massachusetts, he graduated from Dartmouth College in 1857, moving to Cincinnati, Ohio, where he attended Cincinnati Law School. While serving in the Union Army during the Civil War, he was wounded and had his left leg amputated. After the war, he served as a city solicitor, judge, and was elected to the governorship in 1871, serving one term. From 1877 to 1881, he was the Minister to France, appointed by President Hayes.

Scope and Contents

The collection consists of letters of introduction, invitations and responses, and newspaper clippings in French and English regarding the Presidential campaign of 1876, all contained in a scrapbook.
