Scope and Content of Collection

Collection contains 1 microfilm reel and 15 files of photocopies of original documents in the Huntington Library collections. The microfilm (Series I) shows documents on the incorporation of the first public library in California in 1849. The files (Series II) are composed of documents from the David Jacks Collection including an oath of allegiance to the United States, correspondence, book of records, maps, and property matters relating to a military installation, the Salinas Valley Railroad, and Colton Hall. There are also Monterey jail register records, correspondence regarding postal service employees in 1849-50, records of a charter election in 1850, and petitions to the Common Council of Monterey in 1850 (for a July 4th celebration) and in 1851 (to regulate licenses for Jewish pedlars [sic] and Hawkers). In addition to the above files there is a copy of a finding aid to the David Jacks Papers at Stanford University and a list of the personal and business papers donated by the Jacks family to the Huntington Library.
